APC may adopt existing party; INEC keeps mum on new group

Following the emergence of a new political group – African Peoples’ Congress, APC- which is also seeking registration from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Dailypost has learnt that members of the All Progressive Congress, APC may decide to move en masse to the All Democratic Congress, ADC or All Peoples’ Congress of Nigeria, APCN.

However, the impediment is that to get registered, the unified party must hold a convention not earlier than May to officially adopt a name.

Many observers have questioned the sudden advent of the African Peoples’ Congress, also an unregistered party that shares the same acronym as the widely-known All Progressive Congress. In the meantime, INEC has refused to name those behind the new group.

INEC spokesman, Kayode Idowu, on Monday maintained that he was not in a position to reveal sponsors or solicitors behind the new application.

“What the law requires is that if a group applies and the law has already provided for things to be met, like a checklist, it is not a matter of INEC cherry picking or preferences…once a group meets that checklist it is registered with that name.”

A letter of application by the “new” APC addressed to the INEC chairman, dated February 28, 2013, was signed by Barrister Nwokorie Samuel Chinedu. The solicitors’ chamber is named Legal World Chamber based at Ambeez Plaza, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

Curiously, the ‘Wadata Plaza’ national headquarters of the ruling People’s Democratic Party,PDP is located at Michael Okpara Way, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
