Animal diseases hit Yobe

Reports received by the Yobe State Pilot Livestock Development Programme (YPLDP) have it that there are reported cases of some animal diseases in six local government areas of the state.

Confirming the situation to DAILY POST correspondent, Dr. Abba Mustapha Gaidam, Program Manager of YLPDP, said the cases were recoded in six local government areas, namely: Jakusko, Fika, Gulani, Bade, Nangere and Tarmuwa.

“I can confirm to you that reported cases of the diseases were imported by migratory animals, hence exposing other animals in the LGAs and these diseases include: Contagious Bovine Plueropneumonia (CBPP) and foot and mouth diseases,” he said.

According to the program manager, the reported cases came on the heel of concluded plan by the state government to vaccinate no fewer than one million livestock as part of annual mass vaccination campaign of livestock slated to hold in December.

He allayed the fears of livestock farmers and the general public that it is not an outbreak but reported cases of the diseases’ signs and symptoms, while urging them to report any case of abnormalities in their animals to the nearest veterinary office for necessary action.
