Irate members of the People Democratic Party, PDP, have set a Hilux vehicle of the Nigerian Police force ablaze in Gwaram Local Government.
The incident happened at the PDP campaign rally for the Jigawa North Central when the police fired teargas canister to disperse some party’s supporters fighting in the venue.
An eyewitness who claimed anonymity said, the incident worsened when the canister hit one of the party supporters who fell in the crowd.
“PDP supporters alleged that the police was instructed by APC administration to disrupted the rally,” he alleged.
“Party supporters became angry because they were suspecting that the shot had killed the victim which infuriated the charged crowd that started chasing the police officers,” he stated.
The incident attracted the attention of dignitaries including Alhaji Sule Lamido who was on the podium.
The crowd refused to adhere to the plea by Alhaji Sule Lamido to stop attacking the police van while some even went ahead and brought corn stalks and stuffed them inside the vehicle and set it on fire.
The situation was brought under control when Lamido quickly rounded-up the rally by coming down from the podium to where the burning police vehicle was and ordered the crowd to leave the spot.
It could be recalled that on January 9th Police in Jigawa had teargassed members of the Peoples Democratic party at a rally in Gumel local government area for allegedly holding campaign without police approval.
The Peoples Democratic party had alleged that police was given the instructions by the Jigawa state Governor, Alhaji Muhammad Badru Abubakar to disrupt the rally.
Responding to the allegation, the Jigawa state police commissioner, CP Bala Zama Sachi debunked the PDP’s allegations.
The CP explained that he was never influenced by anybody but was concerned about the security and betterment of people of the state.
