Anderlecht clinch record 34th Belgian league title

Lukacz Teodorczyk scored twice, as Anderlecht defeated Sporting Charleroi 3-1, to win the Beligan league title for a record 34th time on Thursday.

Teodorczyk, known as “Teo” among fans, opened scoring in the second half a scrappy close-range goal, before beating the offside trap in the 81st minute to secure their first title in three years.

The win gave Anderlecht a seven-point lead with one fixture left to play. Their closest rival FC Brugge were beaten 2-1 at KV Ostend.

They could have won the title last weekend, but playmaker Youri Tielemans missed a late penalty in a 1-1 draw at Brugge.

After defending champions, FC Brugge dominated the early part of the season, Anderlecht came back and returned to the top this spring.

They never looked back in the decisive playoff mini-league among the top six finishers, whose points from the regular season had been halved.
