Anambra: Victims storm police station after arrest of phone-stealing cartel

Several persons, whose phones were snatched from them by a syndicate which specializes in stealing mobile phones, have besieged a police station in Anambra to retrieve them, after the cartel was arrested.

DAILY POST gathered that the syndicate was stopped along Ifite road in Awka by operatives of Operation Puff Adder, while driving in a shuttle bus.

Anambra State Public Relations Officer, SP Haruna Mohammed, who revealed this, said, “On the 28/6/2019 at about 8:40pm, Puff Adder operatives in conjunction with Patrol team attached to B’ division Awka while on stop and search duties along Ifite Road, Awka intercepted a one chance robbery syndicate operating in a Shuttle bus with registration number FGG 38 ZX.”

Mohammed added that four persons belonging to the syndicate, who were driving in the bus, were arrested.

They include: “Nonso Okakpu the driver of the shuttle bus who is aged 39years, and hails from Akwa village Ifitedunu, Vincent Nweke; aged 25years from Umuawulu, Nibo, Onyebuchi Odogwu, aged 20 from Nkerefi in Nkanu East of Enugu State and Emmanuel Paul Udeh, 20years from Achi in Oji River, also from Enugu.”

Mohammed said, during a search, several phones including: five Infinix hot-5 phones, one Tecno phone, one Nokia phone, one XQ phone, one Q-UP Mobile phone and one TKK phone, including others were found on them.

According to him, upon switching on the phones, several victims of the syndicate have been trooping to ‘B’ Division Police Station to identify and also narrate their ordeals with the group before picking up their phones.

Mohammed also added that the syndicates specialized in snatching cars from unsuspecting owners, just as several other exhibits were found on them.

The exhibits included: “one locally made double barrel pistol, another fabricated double barrel pistol, one locally made revolver pistol, four live .9mm ammunition, one expended .9mm ammunition, five live cartridges, assorted charms and cash sum of N11,740.

“The syndicate specialized in robbing innocent students of their phones, snatching of cars & other valuables. Already some of the victims have been contacted through their phones and are trooping to the station to reveal circumstances surrounding their predicaments.

“Case is under investigation after while suspects would be charged to Court for prosecution.”
