Anambra to introduce sign language in schools

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has disclosed efforts by his administration to introduce sign language in all secondary schools in the state to facilitate easy communication with the deaf.

He said qualified teachers who are deaf would be recruited for that purpose.

Declaring open the first international Deaf Awareness Week celebration in Awka, the governor revealed that his administration has offered automatic employment to about 42 persons with disability in the state.

Represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Disability Matters, Barrister Chukwuka Ezewuzie, Obiano pledged to make everything possible to give people living with disability a sense of belonging and appealed for their support.

The Chairman Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Lawrence Nwanolue, encouraged the participants to be united in demanding for their rights, noting that the state government had their interests at heart.

The state Chairman, Nigerian National Association of the Deaf, Mr. Udeagu Ikegbuna, on behalf of the body, promised to reciprocate the efforts, love and care of the governor by voting massively for him to ensure his second tenure in office.

A resource person, Promise Nwude in a paper presentation, pleaded with government at all levels to provide deaf people with teaching skills and equipment as it was in regular schools.
