The Anambra Police Command on Tuesday said it had set up a Special Road Monitoring Team to check impunity and recklessness on major roads in the state.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Uche Eze, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha that the new team had been directed to restore sanity on the roads.

Eze said the team that was operating on several vehicles would “put to end all negativities, indiscipline and intentional blocking of major roads in the state’’.

“The team that was recently set up by the Commissioner of Police will check the indiscriminate use of sirens in the state, especially by unauthorised individuals or groups.

“They would check incidents of tinted glass; absence of number plate on vehicles; covering of number plate and incomplete vehicle documentation,’’ he said.

The police spokesman said the team was mandated to deal decisively with commercial drivers that pick passengers or load passengers and goods along the roads.

“The team would also check all forms of reckless driving involving official convoys, bullion van drivers as well as bus drivers, especially coaster bus drivers in Onitsha.

“Since these drivers had been warned times without number on the dangers they pose to other road users,’’ he said.

Eze said that the special team would be assisted by crime patrol as well as stop-and-search teams already existing in the state, “if need be’’.

“The Commissioner of Police wants to restore sanity and decency on the road in order to protect lives of many law abiding citizens of Anambra,’’ he added.
