Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed has been confirmed as the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the new UN Secretary-General António Guterres through his spokesperson, Mr Stephane Dujarric.
“Incoming Secretary-General António Guterres has announced his Deputy. Welcome back to the @UN @AminaJMohammed!” it read.
Few days ago, Nigeria’s government reacted to Amina’s purported appointment saying “she remains our Minister of Environment”.
Mohammed, who was appointed Minister by President Muhammadu Buhari in November 2015, had formerly served as adviser to the outgoing UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
