An amendment of the Act establishing the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, to reposition the institution towards advancement of learning scaled second reading in the Senate on Wednesday.
Sponsor of the motion, Senator Jibrin Barau (APC Kano North) explained that NOUN’s concept and operations were meant to be information and technology-driven, emphasising that there should be no discrimination of their products for any reason.
Barau maintained that objectives of the Open University should be crafted in a manner that it enhances educational efficiency which confers impeccable status on the institution.
“Mr. Senate President, distinguished colleagues, section 1(3) of NOUN Act which deals with objectives should be amended for efficiency of the institution,” he noted.
According to him, open university system across the world remains the best option for educating people, stressing that Nigeria cannot be left behind.
Supporting the motion, Senator Ajayi Borofice (APC), Ondo North Senatorial district noted that the world has shifted towards tele-education, saying the nation needs to strengthen laws that ensures quality education.
In his remark, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki express commitment of the 8th Senate to ensure that the open university operates without inhibitions.
With this development, relief may be coming the way of graduates of faculty of Law at NOUN who have been experiencing difficulty in going to Law school.
Senator Barau, who spoke with DAILY POST on the bill after plenary, stressed that the amendment would solve the NOUN law graduates face-off with Council for Legal Education once the bill is passed into law.
