Ambode seeks private sector partnership to tackle insecurity

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Wednesday, urged the private sector to partner with the state government in its fight against insecurity in the state.

Ambode, while pledging his commitment towards protecting lives and property in the state noted that security agents need the right technology to fully combat crimes.

The State Governor made the call at a dinner organised in honour of outgoing and incoming members of the board of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund in the state.

According to the statement issued on Wednesday and signed by Ambode’s Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, the governor emphasized the need for private sector to partner with government in tackling insecurity.

“With the reality that there are not enough security operatives to secure the state, the next level is to invest in the right technology which will help in the fight against crime.

“The state needs CCTV in all public places and data of all suspected criminal elements. It is important for police stations to have technology to access data from all over the world so as to make the tracking of criminals easier.

“To police a state with over 21 million people requires a lot more than additional policemen. I urge members of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund and the private sector to help in the area of investing more on technology, which is not cheap, hence the need for massive support for the government,” Ambode was quoted as saying.

Ambode, while commending the outgoing board members of LSSTF for the good job they did said the government had been enjoying strong partnership with the private sector since their inauguration in November 2007.

“This initiative has generated over N4bn, as well as donations of patrol vehicles and other security equipment by individuals and corporate organisations. It has contributed significantly to improving the operational capacity of our security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, thereby increasing the safety of our state and residents,” he added.

He also expressed confidence that the new board will consolidate on the good works of the outgoing board with a view to keeping the state safe.
