Amapakabo denies signing new Rangers contract

Head coach of Enugu Rangers, Imama Amapakabo, has denied putting pen to paper on a new two-year contract with the club.

The 43-year-old tactician’s N1million-a-month deal, expired on the day he led the Flying Antelopes, to their first Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title in 32 years.

It is understood that Amapakabo and his players took pay cuts, in their bid to end a long wait for the title.

Rangers have now moved to reward him, especially with speculations linking him with South African club, Chippa United and two NPFL teams, Enyimba and Kano Pillars.

Acting chairman of the Flying Antelopes, Steve Oruruo, reportedly said: “He has renewed his contract with Rangers by the grace of God.”

The agreement was reached after a meeting the coach had with Enugu State Sports Commissioner, Charles Ndukwe and Oruruo.

But Amapakabo has debunked such stories.

“I am very tired as I speak, I just got back from a trip and went into a meeting with the management. When I rose up from the meeting I just said I will stay but nothing more than that. No formal signing has been done. I am surprised to see it in the media that I have signed,” he told Goal.

“I felt it would be embarrassing if I go to the press without anything concrete since we haven’t agreed yet but I was surprise to see it in the press that I have signed a two-years contract when I haven’t done anything.”
