Amaechi/Omehia: Court adjourns hearing till November

The Supreme Court has adjourned till November 11, 2013 an appeal seeking the termination of the 2nd tenure of Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi.

Amaechi had gone to the court to appeal the decision of the Court of Appeal granting ousted Governor Celestine Omehia leave to challenge the conduct of the April, 2011 governorship election in Rivers State.

However, the Supreme Court consolidated several appeals on the matter and adjourned till November 11 following the application by counsel to Omehia, U.N Udechukwu.

Counsel to Rotimi Amaechi, Lateef Fagbemi is asking the Supreme Court to nullify the leave granted to Omehia by the court of Appeal.

According to him,”Mr. Omehia who was not a party now came to appeal for the court to nullify an election. What is his interest in this matter. He contested on another platform. We are saying the decision of the court of appeal should be nullified”.

On his part, Counsel to Omehia, U.N Udechukwu is urging the Supreme Court to uphold the leave granted to Celestine Omehia by the Court of Appeal and determine whether Governor Amaechi was eligible or not to contest the April, 2011 general election.

In the mean time, Chief of staff to Rivers State Governor, Tony Okocha dismissed insinuations that Amaechi would be removed from office by the court.

Okocha alleged that the opposition had engaged in desperation to grab power from Amaechi at all cost.
