Amaechi expresses readiness to die for democracy, as Army denies soldiers withdrawal


Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has stated that he was ready put his life on the line to ensure the sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy.

The Governor who spoke on Wednesday through his Commissioner for Information and Communication, Ibim Semenitari, was reacting to the withdrawal of soldiers attached to the Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital

“Naturally, the Governor is worried that his security has been withdrawn. But like he had said in the past, he is willing to pay the supreme price for democracy. If that is the case, so be it,” she said.

Amaechi said only a handful of policemen and men of the State Security Service, SSS, were left with him, a development he described as surprising.

The embattled governor said he was not bothered about his safety, but the security of the people, adding that, “Although I feel safe at this time, you never can tell what may happen even this night.”

Soldiers attached to the Governor were withdrawn on Wednesday, after a number of thugs stormed the Government House complex.

However, the Nigerian Army had on Thursday denied knowledge of the withdrawal of the soldiers.

Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the 2 Brigade Command, Bori Camp, Major Mike Etete, when asked to comment on the development said, “I don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t know where you get your information from.

“But all I can tell you right now is that I don’t know whether the soldiers have been withdrawn.”
