Almajiri schools are underfunded – Group

A group, the Grassroots Development Network yesterday punctured the chest beating of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration over the establishment of the Almajirai Schools, saying the schools cannot provide qualitative teaching because they are underfunded.

According to the National Coordinator of the group, Yusuf Garba, who spoke in Kaduna, about 127 Almajirai schools across the northern states lacked requisite teaching and learning facilities.

“The federal government earmarked huge sums of money for the universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, but almajirai schools lack funding,” he said.

He called on the federal government to pay attention to the schools by providing adequate books, teaching aids and qualified teachers to close the gap with other public schools.

Garba also said government has to empower the National Commission for Nomadic Education to empower it to be able to supervise the almajirai schools because most of the pupils there were nomads, adding that the commission was conversant with their needs.

Garba added that the number of almajirai (beggars) on the streets in northern states are more than those going to school, calling on the government to intensify campaign on school enrolment.
