A 31-year-old man, Anthony Okeke who was arraigned on a one-count charge for allegedly attempting to abduct the immediate past governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sullivan Chime, has been set free.

Okeke was set free a few days before Governor Chime handed over the mantle of the State leadership to the new governor, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Okeke was arrested and charged to court for attempting to kidnap the past governor after breaking into the former governor’s convoy around 11.30pm on February 22, 2015.

Although the courts had embarked on an industrial action, Okeke was said to have been taken to court on the order of the then state governor before been set free.

It was, however, not clear if the charges brought against him have been cancelled.

The development was confirmed by some memebers of his family and an Enugu-based rights activist, Mr. Ayo Omatayo.

It was gathered that Omatoyo had written to the then governor two weeks before Okeke’s release, followed by another letter from the Amnesty International.
