Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has assured electorates in remote towns and villages across the country that they will be mobilized to vote massively in next month’s general elections.
While noting that the February elections is of great importance to Nigerians all over, ALGON argued that it would not be appropriate for eligible voters, particularly those in the grassroots to be disenfranchised from participating in the voting exercise.
Disclosing this to newsmen upon assuming duties at the headquarters of the association in Abuja on Monday, National Chairman of ALGON’s Interim Management Committee, who doubles as Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Micah Jiba revealed that the association “is talking to electorates at the grassroots to ensure that they come out en masse to vote at the polls.”
He explained that ALGON has a lot of responsibilities ahead of next month’s general elections even as he called for peaceful polls across the country.
Speaking on issues affecting the finances of local governments, Jiba said the association had not ruled out the opportunity of working with state governments to resolve the controversies surrounding the issues of joint accounts by both tiers of government.
He said the association has not foreclosed amicable resolution of the issue as it had often times expressed the belief that resolving the logjam was not beyond control.
The chairman maintained that ALGON remained strong and united and disclosed that its members had buried all forms of bitterness within their ranks and has resolved to rebuild the association.
Jiba, while disclosing that his leadership would run a broad-based administration which would be pragmatic within the period it will be in power, said, “I want to make a commitment that we’ll be faithful in our service to ALGON, because this new leadership is going to be humane and broad-based.”
