The Akwa Ibom Government is to demolish one illegal filling station being constructed along Oron road in Nyong Essien area of Uyo local government area of the state. Mr Iniobong Essien, the state Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo on Monday.
Essien said that the structure was illegal, adding that the environment was not suitable for the filling station in the area.
“There is a petrol station coming up somewhere in Oron road around Nyong Essien Street.
“We want to tell whoever is putting up the filling station to stop it because the building has already been marked for demolition,’’ Essien said.
He advised the owner of the station that the State Government would not allow the structure to be erected there.
“We want to appeal to the owner that any other thing could be suitable for the place but certainly not a filling station,’’ he said.
The commissioner also decried the habit of building on gutters to obstruct the drains.
“Wherever you have illegal structures particularly on the waterways, those structures will go and if the construction of the buildings had no permit, government would not compensate the owners.
“We appeal to all concerned to go and get government permit and approval for whatever buildings they want to put up in order to avoid demolition in the future,” said Essien. (NAN)
