The Akwa Ibom state Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo has described as false and unfounded the allegation against him by the state governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel of aiding ‘an illegal invasion’ of the State Assembly complex by the five factional lawmakers.
Kimo who made the rebuttal on Wednesday while interacting with some journalists in his office at Ikot-Akpanabia Uyo, insisted that it was not within his jurisdiction to prevent any lawmaker from gaining entrance into the state Assembly, stressing that it was only a competent court of law that has the powers to do so.
According to him, “It is unfortunate the way politics is being played and police under my watch will remain fair and apolitical. We are here to maintaine law and order.
“For now we have no right to deny anybody from assessing the house of Assembly except the competent court of law.”
Against the allegation that he deployed heavily armed police officers into the assembly to aide the five factional lawmakers, the commissioner explained that the only policemen inside the assembly complex during the crisis were the Divisional Police Officer DPO of the House of Assembly, his personnel and the policemen attached to the honourable house members.
He added that the policemen deployed were at the flash points and strategic places around the state assembly so as to prevent miscreants from gaining access into the assembly and cause more mayhem.
He, however, challenged the governor to provide the video clips where he supervised the escorting of the lawmakers into the chambers, saying that as a commissioner of police, he would not condescend so low to play as an aide to a lawmaker.
“Like yesterday, all that we did was to restore peace. It was totally false that I aided the lawmakers to gain entrance into the House of Assembly. In fact I was in my office when all these things started. I was told that the governor wanted to see me. I had to move immediately to see the governor because he is the chief security officer of the state
“When I went to his office, unfortunately I was told he had gone to the house of Assembly and I had to reverse and meet him there, and we ensured that peace was restored.
“So, where did the video clips of my supervision emanate from? Was it my ghost or an ambivalence? Will I be in my office at the time the crisis was reported and be at the scene of the crisis at the same time?” He queried.
“So I repeat, not at all, I am a responsible person and I man of integrity. I have a name to protect and I am pained because I am a human being and I don’t expect anybody to wake up and start casting aspersions on me. We need to be encouraged but reverse was the case, however, we will not be deterred, we will continue to do our best,” he said.
Kimo also denied that some people with fake army uniforms were arrested yesterday and that 18 AK47 guns were recovered from them, describing such allegation as ‘totally unfounded.’
On the governor’s call for his immediate redeployment, the commissioner said, “Well we are in a democracy and every body has the right to express his opinion. I am not worried since I still have my life. The governor did not call for my life but for my redeployment and I will not question his reasons.
“There is no big deal about that, I did not bring myself to Akwa Ibom state, we are like nomads. So, I will leave the matter to God, you, and the people to judge,” he said.
