Akpeyi to be Nigeria’s No 1 at 2016 Olympics

Samson Siasia is expected to make Daniel Akpeyi his first-choice goalkeeper at this year’s Olympic Games, ahead of Emmanuel Daniel,

Akpeyi, who plays for Chippa United in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League, will be one of the three over-aged players included for the competition.

The 29-year-old was not originally included in Siasia’s provisional list, as the coach intended to pick only outfield players to fill his over-age quota.

“Dan (Akpeyi) was not on the list before but coach (Siasia) realises he needs an experienced goalkeeper in the squad especially after the Korea tournament,” a source within the team informed AfricanFootball.

“He (Akpeyi) is not new to coach and that’s why he has been selected and I can tell you that he will make the team except any last minute change like his club refusing to release him, which we don’t think will happen.”

Akpeyi is expected to resume for pre-season on July 6.
