The United Labour Congress continued its picketing of facilities of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company for the second day.
The National President of the newly formed ULC, Joe Ajaero flew in from Lagos to join the protest.
Ajaero told DAILY POST in an interview that the leadership of the union held series of meetings with the management of PHED and the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Zaki Ahmed.
He said PHED management appealed for time to study a judgment by the National Industrial Court, which is one of the issues in contention.
Ajaero said a meeting will be called with other executive members of the United LabourCongress to determine the next line of action.
The National President of ULC said part of their demands from PHED management was in the interest of electricity consumers.
According to Ajaero, “How can Nigerians be paying for darkness? They will not give people light but they will not stop billing you. We even have information that they often reject feeds from the Federal government.
“The Federal government will send feed of up to 300MW for Port Harcourt zone but they will reject it and take only 100MW. What kind of wickedness is that? They don’t want to pay but they give customers estimated bills and keep making money.
“I came in from Lagos to help our members to further drive home their demands.
“Now we have met with the Commissioner of Police who called for a meeting to mediate in what is happening and they (PHED) have asked for some time to study the position of the court before we can dialogue. We will go back and discuss with our members before we will say this is what we will do.”
The management of the PHED is yet to speak directly with the media on the development.
