The presidency has reacted to a comment by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday that his wife belongs to his kitchen.
Buhari, who is on a three-day visit to Germany, made the controversial comment while answering questions from the media alongside his host, German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.
Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, spoke on the development on his Twitter handle.
The aide described the responses of his principal as a joke.
“My friends, can’t a leader get a sense of humour anymore? Mr. President laughed before that statement was made.
“The President respects the place of women in our society and believes in the abilities of women.
“He was obviously throwing a banter.
“One of Nigeria’s most sensitive office today is headed by a woman, Mrs. Adeosun. This is an evidence of the confidence he reposes on women.
“Politics sometimes should be spiced with humour. Those of us around him know there is never a dull moment with him.”
Aisha in an interview with BBC, said: “The president does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don’t know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years.
“Some people were sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position.”
Asked whether he would contest the 2019 election, she replied: “He is yet to tell me but I have decided as his wife, if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again.”
