Danjuma
As activities kick off to mark the 50th memorial of former Head of State, General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiy-Ironsi, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo has demanded an apology from General Theophilus Danjuma, (Rtd.) and several others.
DAILY POST recalls that Aguiyi-Ironsi was murdered in the July 29, 1966 counter coup.
The youth wing of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, the Ohanaeze Youth Council, OYC, in a statement on Thursday also urged the Federal Government to immortalise the late military ruler.
In the statement by its National President, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, OYC regretted that 50 years after his death, the Federal Government was yet to recognize Ironsi, who staked his life for the unity of the country.
OYC said that the Federal Government should name the nation’s seat of power, Aso Villa, after the late Head of State, in recognition of his invaluable sacrifices for the unity of Nigeria.
The youth group regretted that “while the masterminds of the heinous act are still moving around and parading themselves as statesmen, the members of Aguiyi-Ironsi family have continued to wallow in pains and poverty.
“We, therefore, enjoin the Federal and various State Governments to give attention to the welfare of the family to assuage their pains.”
