AFCON 2013: NFF too broke to offer Super Eagles enhanced bonuses

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), have been forced to shelf plans to pay the Super Eagles enhanced winning bonuses, because they do not have the financial capacity to do so.

Shehu Adamu, the head of NFF finance committee, confirmed in an interview with MTNFootball, that there will be no added incentives for the team at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Adamu said the players will be paid their usual bonuses – $10,000 for a win and $5,000 for a draw.

“We are not preparing anything special as incentives for the Eagles. It’s the regular bonus they would get,” Adamu revealed.

The NFF had initially planned to pay as much as $30,000 to each member of the team for a win at the tournament, but they are so bankrupt that they have forced to borrow money for the country’s AFCON campaign. The current financial situation of the NFF is as a result of a Lagos Court freezing their accounts over a contractual dispute with Minaj Television.

The government had since approved the budget for the Nations Cup, but the NFF say they are yet to get it, even as the competition kicks off this weekend.

“We are yet to receive the money for the Nations Cup and this has slowed down a lot of plans for the tournament,” a top official lamented.

“We are not even sure when the money would be released. We are only hopeful that it would come in on time to avoid hiccups at the games in South Africa.”
