Portland Timbers striker Bright Dike and Heartland goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, have been placed on standby, after the true extent of Austin Ejide’s injury was discovered.
Doctors have confirmed that Ejide suffered a muscle tear in Wednesday’s friendly game against Cape Verde and is now a major doubt for the Africa Cup of nations.
Ejide had played down the injury, insisting he would be fit for the competition, but it appears Stephen Keshi is not ready to take chances.
“We have got result of scan on Ejide and it revealed he had a muscle tear. A statement will be made by Stephen Keshi on him later over his availability for AFCON but two players Daniel Akpeyi and Bright Dike have been put on standby,” Eagles spokesman Ben Alaiya said.
Ejide missed most of the 2010 Nations Cup in Angola with injury and his latest injury is especially a big blow, as had regained the number one shirt from Vincent Enyeama.
