Adoyi Ali: AFCON 2013: The Chelsea-Nigeria victory

I know for sure that many Chelsea fans will rise in support of this piece of opinion. I also know that opinion such as this will be condemned by Nigerians who hate Chelsea, not because chelsea are the Champions of Europe, but because they have personal beef for Mikel Obi, whom they claim is extremely proud. Pride to me, is a natural instinct in man. It’s only those whose stars shine in their own fields of endeavour that can be proud of themselves. Life is ‘effizzy’. Do your job well and raise your shoulders. It can only be bad when you raise your shoulders to a level where you begin to lose focus. Mikel is proud of himself and his ability, yet he continues to strive to become a better person in what he does.

However, in this piece of writing, I see the Nigerian victory as a Chelsea victory. I won’t hesitate to say that about 200 useful Chelsea passes gave Nigeria the Chelsea victory. In my reflection, I continue to appreciate God and Chelsea for the AFCON victory. What magic would have been more useful and fruitful than the Chelsea magic after we had waited for 19 fruitless years?

I know that your query is that I’m ‘blabbing’ too much. You are patiently waiting to get details on how Chelsea gave Nigeria the AFCON victory, and not Keshi, not Amokachi, not NFF and not even the ‘Luck’ that is now our national slogan. Truth must be told; at the defence of the Nigerian squad was Kenneth Omeruo of Chelsea, at the midfield was Mikel Obi, and in the attack was Victor Moses. What more would anyone say? Why is the victory not Chelsea-Nigeria victory? Who among the three players was not consistent and did not live up to expectation? Omeruo consistently shielded the Nigerian goal areas. His doggedness kept the Eagles flying. Nigeria conceived just few goals, an indication of a good defence led by the Chelsea defender. He lived above expectation. The Ivorians could not launch an attack through Omeruo’s position, and they failed. Omeruo is young, but with reasonable experience to block the Ivorian’s aggressive attack.

If we had up to 200 good passes in the AFCON, Mikel must have contributed to 199 of those passes. No goals scored or corner kicks played that were not Mikel’s initiative. He is no doubt the best Midfielder of the tournament as he outshined both keita and Toure.

The man, Victor Moses was the strength of the Nigeria’s attack. With his amazing display, the Eagles stood against all difficulties in the field of play. Victor’s approaches at each game pave way to the best result after 19 years in the dungeon. Tell me what Chelsea has not done for Nigeria! Chelsea gave Nigeria the said victory, hence the earlier we accept Chelsea as a family, the better for us. Thank you Chelsea for the AFCON victory.
