The plan to form a Mega Party to act as formidable opposition ahead of 2019 general elections has been threatened following the refusal of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) to form an alliance with any political party.
AD members spoke through their governorship candidate in the just concluded governorship election in Ondo State, Chief Olusola Oke during their stakeholders meeting in Akure, the state capital.
Oke said they are not aware of any move to merge with other parties to form a Mega party.
AD, which is mainly a Yoruba party has once ruled the South West states between 1999-2003 before it was crushed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
It came back to the political limelight, when the Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola directed all his political loyalists in Ondo state to move into the party and support Oke’s ambition, who was his choice during the Ondo State governorship poll.
It will be recalled that Aregbesola backed Oke during the governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, which Oke came third.
It was learnt that the Osun governor directed Oke to resuscitate AD in the state, that if he wins the poll, it will assist their move to form a mega party to tackle APC in 2019.
But Oke at the meeting said, “We are not aware of any mega party. We are not involved. What we are doing is to re-position our party.
“As you can see, almost all the party leaders are here except those who excused themselves.”
“I have met with the leaders of the party. We are solid and united. In a few months, we shall engage in party activities across the state.
“Leadership is about responsibility and commitment to common good. We shall at all times give enormous considerations to service and development.”
