The Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Ebonyi State chapter yesterday warned Governor Martin Elechi against politicising the traditional institution in the state.

The warning came following the recent dethronement of four traditional rulers in Igbessa by the state government.

The party Chairman, Dr. Sylvester Nwambe, said the sacking of the royal fathers did not follow laid down procedures.

According to Nwambe, the Governor’s decision amounts to an act of intimidation of the traditional rulers.

The party chieftain noted further that the state government’s decision could set a bad precedent by misdirecting youth on the path of civility and dialogue as the basis of transactions in a democracy.

Nwambe said, “The dethronement of the traditional rulers should be condemned by all genuine lovers of democracy in very strong terms.

“Granted that Governor Martin Elechi served under a military regime for a long time, he should not go ahead with the mistaken notion that high handed show of power is acceptable in a democracy. We wish to condemn the dethronement of four traditional rulers from Igbessa clan by the governor because it did not follow the laid down procedures of punishing traditional rulers.

“There was no inquiry, be it administrative or judicial, to examine the so-called offences of the traditional rulers before dethroning them. For the fact that traditional rulers are presented to the state government for recognition does not make the custodians of traditional institution appointees of government.”
