ACN, CPC, ANPP finally merge into All Progressive Congress, APC

Leading opposition parties in Nigeria on Wednesday formally announced a new name under which it will contest the next presidential election in 2015.

The parties, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) have adopted a common front called All Progressive Congress (APC).

The announcement came after opposition governors met earlier in the week to continue further talks on the plan.

In a statement made available to newsmen in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, former Foreign Minister, Tom Ikimi of the Action Congress of Nigeria averred, “At no time in our national life has radical change become more urgent.

“And to meet the challenge of that change, we the following progressive political parties, namely ACN, ANPP, APGA and CPC, have resolved to merge forthwith and become the All Progressive Congress,” he avowed.

The PDP has won every presidential election since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999, and the decision by the opposition to form a coalition was meant to oust the ruling party in the 2015 general polls.
