Accident claims nine lives in Cross River

A fatal accident, involving two cars in Calabar, Cross River State capital, has claimed nine lives.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, along Marian Road in Calabar Municipality local government area of the State.

An eyewitness, who gave his name as Mbora Ekpo said, “seven persons, 5 males and 2 females, including the taxi driver from the Audi vehicle died on the spot, while the two persons in the Toyota vehicle also died this evening.”

Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo said that the corpses of the victims have been taken to the morgue at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, Calabar.

“We were informed that 6 persons died at the scene, so our men rushed in to control the situation. Now, I am hearing that two more persons later died this morning. Their bodies had been deposited at the mortuary at the UCTH as we carry out further investigations”, she said.

DSP Ugbo also said the Camry driver was at fault as he was likely drunk before driving.

“The Camry driver coming from Efio Ette was over speeding and likely drunk, so he couldn’t control the vehicle when he ran into the taxi which was trying to make a U-turn.

“We have warned about over speeding just like the FRSC has, but people don’t listen. Be it day or night, you don’t have to over speed because you don’t know what’s at the far end of the road,” she added.
