Abuja Local Government elections holds today


Local Government Council elections will hold today in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The capital city of Nigeria, Abuja is currently made up of six local councils, comprising the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, Kuje, Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada and Kwali.

The front runners hoping to claim victory are candidates of the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria People’s Party, All Progressive Grand Alliance, Congress for Progressive Change and United Progressive Party.

The PDP, ANPP, and ACN are producing the highest number of candidates with 74, 82 and 62 respectively, while the National Conscience Party, NCP, is presenting the lowest with two candidates.

Kehinde Jubril, the Public Affairs Officer of the Abuja Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had on Tuesday in Abuja said that 914,357 candidates registered to vote at the 3052 voting points.

There are 639 polling units in 62 wards in the Nigerian capital, while a total of 269 candidates are contesting the 62 chairmanship, vice chairmanship, and councillorship seats in the six Area Councils.

Jubril added that 19 observer groups have been accredited to observe the election which begins at 8 am today.
