Abiola’s wife vows to take over from Fashola as governor

Mrs. Modupe Onitiri-Abiola, one of the wives of the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential elections, late Chief MKO Abiola, yesterday declared her intention to spearhead the affairs of Lagos come 2015. However, Onitiri-Abiola, was yet to name the party’s platform on which she would run.

She told newsmen in Lagos that her intention to run for the highest seat in Lagos state was born out of her unquenchable desire to assist in the eradication of poverty from the state.

According to her, she had in the past worked with her late husband in the fight for the actualization of the June 12, 1993 elections, which was annulled by the then military president, Ibrahim Babangida.

She said, it was high time Nigeria practiced true democracy at all levels of government to meet the yearnings and aspirations of its citizens.

The aspirant vowed to sweep poverty out of Lagos if elected. Hear her, “There should be no poverty in this state or in this country. There is so much poverty and the situation on ground is extremely terrible, worse than what we thought it was at that time. But, I am trying to look at what exactly is in the interest of the people. “What I am trying to do now is eradicate poverty and I know once you remove poverty, you remove everything and for you to be able to remove poverty, you need to have programmes.

“Some of these programmes include social welfare programmes, free education, free health, affordable homes, good roads, providing for people that are not employed, helping people that are in business and who want to get into business. “When all that is put in place, you will eradicate poverty. Poverty should not exist in this country, not even in Lagos State.”
