Chidi Nwosu, the Abia State chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Friday, lambasted the former senate minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio over his defection to the All Progressives Congress, (APC).
Nwosu described the action of the ex-Akwa Ibom governor as lawless, and called on the leadership of the senate to declare his seat vacant.
Speaking with DAILY POST in a phone interview, on Friday, the former Abia lawmaker explained that the ex-senate minority leader violated the constitutional provisions by defecting to the APC when his former party (PDP) had no internal crisis.
According to him, “I believe that those who make the law, should not break it. And that is the major problem Nigeria has today. The constitutional provision for carpet crossing states that, if there is a crack or division in a party at the national level, a member can defect to another party.
“In the PDP today, there is no faction in PDP. The party is intact. There is no obvious factionalization in PDP. Therefore, there is no room for any PDP legislator to disembark. There is no room for that, unless they create artificial factions.
“Unlike in APC, R-APC has proved on its own that there is division in APC. They have secretariats. So, APC legislators in the national assembly, even at the State Houses of Assembly have left for PDP”.
Nwosu added that, “what Senator Godswill Akpabio has done is lawless, and in defiance to the constitutional provisions. He dumped PDP for APC without recourse to law. He is still basking in impunity, and this is part of it”.
