Abia impasse: Court fixes date to hear Ikpeazu’s appeal

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday adjourned till Aug. 9, hearing of the appeal filed by Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, challenging his removal from office by a Federal High Court, Abuja.

Justice Morenikeji Ogunwumiju, who led four other justices of the court, said that the adjournment was at the instance of all the parties. He said that the adjournment became necessary in order to ensure that all processes were properly filed and exchanged.

Ogunwumiju, however, said all the parties in the matter must remain as they were before the case got to the appellate court.

“This decision should not be misinterpreted to mean a stay-of-execution as we are yet to decide anything,’’ she held.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the election of Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party was annulled by the court on June 27.

Justice Okon Abang who delivered the judgment, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue Mr Uche Ogah, a PDP governorship contender the Certificate of Return as the duly elected governor of Abia. (NAN)
