Abia House of Assembly condemns increasing rate of gambling among school children

The Abia State House of Assembly has condemned the increasing rate of gambling by students and pupils in the state.

The House has, therefore, called on government and parents to play their proper roles in the control of the students.

The state lawmakers also condemned the use of government vehicle plate numbers by past government officials in the state, describing it as an abuse of right.

In a motion on its floor, the Assembly urged all past government officials still using government vehicle plate numbers to return them to the relevant ministries and agencies.

The deputy speaker of the House and chairman House Committee on Information, Chief Alwell Okere, who disclosed this at the monthly press briefing of the House, observed that secondary school students and even primary school pupils were seriously engaged in playing lotto, describing it as a form of gambling.

The House noted that because of the interest these children had developed in the lotto game, many of them had been playing truant in their school, which it noted does not augur well for the state.

Okere said that the House was not against lotto or any gambling but stressed that they were for adults not for minors.

The deputy speaker further disclosed that the House passed a resolution on the menace of erosion in Umudim village, Ngodo, Isuochi in Umunneochi council area and urged the relevant authorities to intervene.

He revealed that the Assembly passed four bills into law in the last one month, which included amendment of the State and Local Government Joint Account which now includes the judiciary and the legislature.
