Abia: Gov. Ikpeazu reveals plans for journalists

Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the Governor of Abia state, has assured journalists, that his administration will continue to take steps that will support the free flow of information and put in place measures that will allow journalists do their work in an atmosphere that is safe and secure.

The Governor stated this on Friday, while declaring open the National Executive Council meeting of the Nigeria Union of Journalists currently holding at the Dr. Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia.

Welcoming the leaders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) from across the country to Abia State, Ikpeazu who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, assured the gentlemen of the pen profession that his administration will continue to support the work of journalists, because, Press Freedom remained a key aspect of the democratic process.

The Governor, assured the journalists that his administration was also committed to the completion of the NUJ Press Center in Abia State, thanking the journalists for electing an Abia son, Comrade Chris Isiguzor as their National President.

According to the Governor, “Two journalists from the Ministry of Information were recently elevated to the position of Permanent Secretaries in the State Civil Service. This is a clear indication of the seriousness with which this government takes journalists”.

President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Chris Isiguzor welcomed his colleagues to his home state and outlined insecurity and safety as the major challenges facing journalists in the country.

DAILY POST reports that the event which was chaired by a former Secretary to the Government of Abia state, Pastor Ralph Egbu, also had in attendance, the Secretary to the Government, Barrister Chris Ezem, Honorable Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, former National President of the NUJ and a former Commissioner for Information in Abia State, Comrade Bonnie Iwuoha, and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information, Abia State, Elder Ifeanyi Agbai, etc.

Also, members of the NUJ National Executive Council consisting of Chairmen of the 36 States Chapters, Zonal Vice Presidents, etc were at the event.
