The Abia State chairman of the Social Democratic Party(SDP), Hon. Chidi Nwosu, Thursday, berated the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in the state for allegedly inducing leaders of opposition parties in order to pave way for Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s return for a second term in office.
Nwosu claimed that the governor allegedly offered one million Naira each to the seventeen local government chairmen of SDP in Abia to secure their endorsement ahead of the March 9 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
Recall that DAILY POST had reported on Tuesday, that the spokesman of the 17 SDP LGA chairmen, Mr. Chijioke Ozems, while addressing newsmen at the NUJ Abia press centre in Umuahia, stated that their adoption was based on the need to have peace in the state, which according to him, can only be achieved if equity is maintained by allowing Ikpeazu to finish his second term.
But, speaking with newsmen in Umuahia, Nwosu said, “The leadership of the party(SDP) learnt that the state governor has promised by giving those people one million Naira each. And I’m asking the governor, instead of giving one million Naira each to non-performing SDP LGA chairmen, he should use that money to settle unpaid pensioners.
“Those who are dying every day because of lack of attention. He could also redirect part of that money to reviving our health sector or educational sector, or all the failed areas in this administration. This government has failed”.
Meanwhile, the Senior Special Adviser to the Abia governor on Social Orientation, Ifeanyi Umere, described the allegation as baseless and unfounded.
He said the endorsement of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu by the SDP local government chairmen in the state, was a clear testimony that the ikpeazu-led administration has laid a solid foundation for the economic and infrastructural development of Abia state.
Umere stated that no amount of propaganda and falsehood would deter the governor from being re-elected for a second term come March 9 (Saturday).
