Abedi Pele supports sons’ decision to quit Black Stars

Three-time African Footballer of the Year, Abedi Pele, has backed his sons’ decision to quit Ghana’s national team.

Andre and Jordan Ayew, who both play for Marseille in France, were dropped from the Black Stars’ squad to the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and thereafter announced they would not represent their country till further notice.

Pele, in an interview with Joy Sports said: “I always believe that they are grown up children, 23 and 21. Well, they live in Europe for the past 23 years so for me this is an opportunity for them to take things on their own.

“But occasionally, father and mother will always chip in a word or two but for the moment, the children are doing the right thing.

“It is their decision and we just have to support them.

“Everybody there is a friend. Kwesi Appiah I have played with him but if you have a friend who has disappointed you, what do you do?”

The brothers recently turned down a plea from the Ghana FA, to reconsider their stance and play in the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Sudan.
