Captain of Sunshine Stars, Sunday Abe, has said that the team must win a trophy in the new season and is eyeing the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title, as well as the Federation Cup.
The Owena Waves finished last season empty-handed and also failed to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup, which led to Kennedy Boboye quitting as head coach.
Abe has now spoken about the importance of winning something this term.
“We are in dire win of a trophy,” Abe told Goal.
“And there’s none more important than the Nigeria Professional Football League title that has eluded us for decades.
“All hands have been on deck in our pre-season campaign and the chorus is to get a trophy this season. I got married in January and had to forgo my honeymoon to ensure we meet this target”, he added.
He also admitted that for Sunshine to win the NPFL title, they have to overcome powerhouses like Enyimba and Kano Pillars.
“Our task is to keep fighting to reach to the top, and if that means taking on Enyima and Kano Pillars all the better,” he continued.
“We know any game against them is a matter of life and death for us, especially the fans, and you have to win it. We’ve got the team to beat anyone and we’re ready for the challenge.
“With a new coach in the team, my teammates need to find the commitment to do things better because we’ve made some great signings and have the talent to do great things this year.”
Sunshine kick off the new campaign with a home match against Akwa United on February 21.
