8 remanded in court over alleged cultism, armed robbery

An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court on Thursday remanded 8 persons over alleged cultism, armed robbery and disturbance of public peace.

The accused are: Kale Bayero, Ibrahim Olatunde, Abeeb Azeez, Sikiru Jimoh, Yinka Alabi, Akeyede Ahmed, Adam Yusuf and Lukman Rafiu.

They are facing an eight-count charge of criminal conspiracy, disturbance of public peace, assault, causing hurt, mischief, attempt to commit culpable homicide, being member of secret cult and armed robbery.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

NAN reports that the prosecutor, Insp. Nasiru Yusuf, told the court that the accused were arrested on Oct. 21, 2018, at Eruda Area of Ilorin.

Yusuf alleged that the accused invaded the house of one Alhaji Kawata Arikewuyo, at Eruda where they robbed them of four cell phones valued unknown and cash sum of N20,000.

The prosecutor said that the accused also destroyed 13 vehicles parked by the roadside at the said area.

Yusuf also alleged that the accused are in the habit of terrorizing residents at the Ilorin metropolis.

The offences contravened Sections 97, 113, 229, 247, 265 and 327 of Penal Code and 14 of Secret Cult (Prohibition) law 2016 and section 6 b of Robbery and Firearm (Special Provision) Act law 2004.

He urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody pending the outcome of investigation.
