No fewer than 72 motorists were arraigned before Magistrate, Mrs. Chinyere Okereke, of a mobile court in Owerri, Imo State capital for allegedly flouting traffic orders.

The trial judge found all the accused guilty as charged and thereby fined them from N2,000 to N10,000.

Their offences include overloading, dangerous driving, seat belt violation, light sign violation, as well as receiving calls while driving.

The Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr. Halilu Haliru, told newsmen after the court sitting that his men would ensure that Imo State remains safe for road users during this festive period.

According to him, “the Command adopts the prosecution of traffic offenders as a last resort, especially when we come across recalcitrant drivers”.

However, the FRSC boss urged drivers to think safety during this Christmas and New Year season, while appealing to commuters of commercial buses to avoid mounting pressure on their respective drivers while driving.

Haliru also decried the bad state of Nigerian roads, urging all stakeholders in the transport industry to join hands together in order to reduce road accidents and deaths on Nigerian roads.
