65-year-old remanded in prison for raping minor

A 65-year-old man, Mr. Brakeme John has been sentenced to five years in prison for raping a seven-year-old girl in Effurun.

He was arraigned before a magistrate court in Udu, Udu local government area of Delta State on Thursday.

It was reported that the minor’s cry for help attracted residents who later rescued her after John had forcefully had sex with her.

The Magistrate, Mr. Moses Akpona, in her ruling found John guilty on a three count charge of having unlawful carnal knowledge, assault and battery.

The accused equally pleaded guilty and begged for mercy to be served with justice.

The presiding judge, however, sentenced him to five years for the first count and two years in the third count without an option of fine.

The persecutor, Mr. Sunday Akemu said the accused committed the offence on June 8th, 2014 at Omokosi chive in Effurun.

He said the convict, who was under the influence of alcohol, held the young girl and dragged her into an uncompleted building and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

According to him, the act contravened section 218 and 222 of the criminal code.
