A 52-year-old, Chief Eyo Eyo Bassey, Village Head of Ikot- Obot in
Bakassi local government area of Cross River State and a staff of Audit Department Ministry of Finance, Cross River state was reportedly killed by a group of persons suspected to be hired assassins in Bakassi LGA of the state.
DAILY POST investigations revealed that the tragic incident occurred
at Ikot Effiom in Bakassi. It was further revealed that there was a land dispute between the deceased and some people in the community and the matter was in court before he was allegedly murdered in cold blood.
An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said his assailants numbering
more than two went to his residence at Ikot Obot opposite Ikot – Effiom primary School at the weekend and killed him.
“When two of them entered his house, it was very obvious that they meant business because one of them was wearing a mask while the other was unasked.
”When they started shooting him, the bullet couldn’t penetrate, they had to device other means because they came prepared.
“They started using matchete on him until they hacked him to death, and this thing happened in the afternoon at about 1pm before anyone could reach him he had already given up the ghost”
According to the eyewitness, there was even serious tussle before Chief
Eyo became a Village Head and there is currently a land dispute which is already in court.
Speaking further, the source said,the deceased was a man of integrity who spoke the truth at all times no matter whose ox is gored and a lot of
“people” felt he was an enemy because he always stood for what was right.
When DAILY POST visited his Calabar residence, the wife of the deceased who was still in shock and very bitter told our reporter that she had nothing to say on the matter.
“Please leave me alone, leave this matter alone, I cannot say anything to you, just leave me alone, forget about this matter” she said.
When contacted on Tuesday,the Police Public Officers Irene Ugbo confirmed the incident.
“We are aware of the murder of Chief Eyo Bassey and we are also aware, investigations is on going.”
