50 burnt to death in Onitsha

No fewer than 50 persons were roasted on Sunday in Onitsha after a tanker conveying fuel fell and burst into flames.

Over 15 buses were burnt in the incident, which happened at about 3pm when a 40-foot trailer laden with fuel had a break failure and rammed into fleet of vehicles at Asaba park, Upper Iweka in Onitsha, Anambra state.

The trailer driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to break failure as it was descending the Enugu/Onitsha Expressway, heading towards Upper Iweka.

Isa Abubakar, the DPO incharge of central police station Onitsha, while confirming the incident said, over 22 corpses were recovered, while three motorcycles were razed.

“We are still removing the dead bodies,” he told newsmen on the scene of the incident.
