50 Bishops, 1000 priests to grace installation of Nsukka Catholic Bishop

No fewer than fifty catholic bishops from the Conference of Nigerian Bishops, led by the Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, His Eminence, John Cardinal Onayikan will perform the installation of Rev. Fr. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah as the new Bishop of Nsukka Catholic Diocese.

The Episcopal ordination/installation has been slated for July 4, 2013 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Cathedral, Nsukka.

Chairman of the Ordination/installation General Committee and former Minister of Information, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, said in Enugu on Tuesday that at least, six governors, several Senators and members of the House of Representatives, members of the federal executive councils especially those from the south-east zone, as well as about 1000 priests have indicated interest to be part of the programme.

Nwodo disclosed that enough mobilization has been made to ensure the success of the event, noting that apart from the ordination/installation of the new bishop, his committee is equally saddled with the responsibility of renovating the temporary residences of both the incoming and retiring catholic bishops of the diocese.

Bishop Onah who until his appointment last month was the first African to have become the Vice Rector of the Pontifical Urban University Rome, Italy, is replacing Bishop emeritus Francis Okobo as the second Bishop to be produced in the Diocese since it was created sometime in 1991.

Born on the 18th August 1956 at Imilike Ani, Udenu local government of Enugu state, the new bishop is expected to lead the over ten thousand catholic faithful in Nsukka diocese which has seven local government council areas.

Nwodo expressed hope that the new Bishop would use his wealth of experience and contacts, having lived about two decades in Rome and by so doing, served under three Catholic Pontiffs, Pope John Paul 11, Pope Benedict and presently, Pope Francis to impact positively on the growth of the 22-year old diocese.
