A 37-year-old graduate of Economics from the Delta State University, Abraka, Emeka Odigwu in a bid to commit suicide drank rat poison after his marriage proposal to his long-time girlfriend was rejected.
DAILY POST gathered that Emekus as he is fondly called, over the weekend proposed to his fiancée but was turned down during an outing which had friends and families in attendance at a fast food joint in Warri. Disappointingly, he attempted to commit suicide before he was rescued.
Reacting to the incident, the State police spokesperson, DSP Celestina Kalu, said Emekus was rescued at a T-Junction in Warri by Police Patrol team while on routine duty, adding that the team found him in a very bad state around Jappa Junction gasping for breaths around 10:30pm.
Kalu noted that the police while attempting to rescue him, recovered a suicide note which reads, “I felt heartbroken and rejected by someone, whom I loved and had given my heart to over the years in the midst of a get together with my friends, I’d rather die and return to my mother’s earth”.
Also commenting on the incident, Emekus’s younger sister, Evelyn Odigwe, disclosed that her brother and the girl were lovers for over three years and had even gone ahead to proposed to her just recently in the presence of their entire family but the whole episode ended up wrongly.
It was further learnt that the girl allegedly dumped the 37-year-old graduate for her childhood friend who had been abroad for six years but returned recently and proposed marriage to her.
Evelyn also stated that the police recovered six sachets of rat poisons on the ground where the victim was found.
“My brother may have gone to buy the rat poisons and drank them because he was really emotional over the girl’s attitude,” Evelyn disclosed.
