34-year-old farmer sentenced to death for robbery in Delta State

For attempting to rob a business woman, a 34-year-old farmer at Kwale town, in Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State, Emeka Ogwu, was yesterday sentenced to death. Ogwu was arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, attempt to commit armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms, contrary to Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. During the trial of the convict at Effurun High Court, Dorothy Asekpokai, the business woman, narrated to the court how she narrowly escaped been robbed by Emeka on June 12, 2007 when she visited her new building site located around Osubi. She also squealed that the convict was at the verge of robbing her on gunpoint but she drove away at top speed and knocked him down.

Subsequently, she called for help which led to the timely arrest and prosecution of the farmer. However, after listening to both the prosecuting and defending parties, the presiding Justice, Godwin Gbemre, found the accused guilty as charged. Thus, he sentenced him to death.
