Not Fewer than 34,000 students of the University of Ilorin in Kwara State are vying for 3,000 available bed spaces in the institution.
While briefing journalist on the accommodation crises in the institution on Sunday, UNILORIN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali said all hands were on deck to provide adequate accommodation for the students.
Prof. Ambali said, “Accommodation of students is one of our priority areas. The government has given us the go-ahead to encourage the public to come and partner with us under the Build Operate and Transfer arrangement.
“Right now, we are talking with almost three developers who are ready to invest within the university. I am sure that before the end of the session or early next session, we will have more accommodation for our undergraduate and post graduate students.
“I know that we are still going to encourage people because right now, the university has a population of about 34,000 students and the facilities we have on campus now can only accommodate just 3,000.
“You can imagine the gap between the needs and the available facilities. So we are still going to encourage and partner with the public to build more hostels within the campus because it is better and safer for the students to be on campus than to be renting houses outside.”
The VC however urged intending investors, corporate organisations and groups to partner with the institution to provide accommodation for the students.
He affirmed that the institution would continue to maintain a high academic standard due to some projects the institution had embarked upon in order to enhance its academic advancement and excellence.
Prof. Ambali concluded by stating his administration commitment in the protection of lives and property in the institution.
