One Chichebe Ogbonna, 31, was on Wednesday remanded in prison custody by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos, for stealing a power generating set valued at N14,000.
Ogbonna, a bus conductor, was docked on a two-count charge of burglary and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Chinalo Uwadione, while testifying before the court said the offence was committed on Jan. 16 at 2.20 p.m., within Ipori Police barracks on Funsho Williams Avenue in Lagos.
Udadione said the accused unlawfully made away with the generating set which was on the balcony of the apartment of one Mr Seamus Osanebi.
The prosecutor added that Ogbonna was arrested by neighbours of the complainant who saw him while trying to remove the generator.
He affirmed, “The accused entered into Osanebi’s balcony on Jan. 16 at about 2.20p.m., and removed a generator valued at N14,000.
“He was apprehended after some of the complainant’s neighbours within the barracks raised an alarm and subsequently seized the stolen generator from him.”
According to the prosecutor, the offence is contrary to Sections 278 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The suspect who admitted his crime pleaded with the court for clemency.
“Please help me; I came to Lagos to look for my brother at Otto but I did not find him. I was just struggling to feed,” Ogbonna said.
The presiding Magistrate, Miss Abiodun Akinde, however ordered the accused to be remanded in prison following his guilty plea.
Akinde consequently adjourned the case to May 4 for sentencing.
