The Interior Minister of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum, says about 31 Boko Haram members have surrendered to authorities.
Speaking on Wednesday, the Minister disclosed that the suspected Boko Haram members who laid down their arms were from Diffa area of the country.
The young people from Diffa who were enrolled in Boko Haram a few years ago, arrived in the remote desert town of Diffa in groups and were being held by local authorities.
One of the surrendered insurgents, while addressing reporters said, “We expect a pardon from the government so that we can participate in the development of the country and help us get rid of the trauma.”
This is coming at a time when the Nigerian Army sacked the insurgents from their strong hold in Sambisa Forest in Borno State, Nigeria.
This was disclosed by President Muhammadu Buhari in a congratulatory message to the troop.
Following the sacking of the insurgents from Sambisa Forest, the Army had declared that the area will be used to train soldiers from nextyear.
President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday said Nigeria’s army captured Boko Haram’s last enclave in the vast Sambisa forest on Friday.
