A 27-year-old farmer, Mohammed Abdullahi, who attempted to kill a cattle rearer identified as Shaibu Zakariyau was yesterday arraigned before a Kwara Magistrates’ Court in Ilorin.
Testifying in court, the prosecuting officer, Insp Mathew Ologbonsaye said the accused dealt the victim a machete blow on the neck, hand and head, leaving him in a state of coma.
The prosecutor said the 27-year-old committed the act because the victim allegedly took his cows into the farmland of the accused, thereby destroying his crops on Oct. 25, at Pategi, in Kwara.
Ologbonsaye told the court that the victim was rushed to the hospital for medical treatment after the incident happened.
Abdullahi however pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder brought against him.
The prosecutor objected to the bail application of the accused, urging the court to remand him, pending the outcome of investigations.
However, the defence counsel, Mr S.T. Giwa, prayed the court to admit his client bail, pending the determination of the case.
Magistrate kalejaiye Yahaya consequently granted the accused to bail in the sum of N500, 000 and two sureties in like sum.
Yahaya adjourned the case till Nov. 18, for further mention.
